No more tax on period pants: what you need to know

No more tax on period pants: what you need to know

January 2024 marks the first month that period pants are officially tax-free in the UK. Right up until this month, period pants have been subject to a 20% 'luxury tax' while items like Jaffa Cakes and crocodile meat have been classed as tax free 'essentials' – we know, we can't believe it either.

Period pants were not covered in the 2021 law change in which the “tampon tax” on period products was removed. This is because they were classed as “garments” and therefore considered exempt. We're massive fans of period pants here at Unfabled, and we're delighted that the scrapping of the period pants tax will now make them more affordable for our community.

In response to the scrapping of the period pants tax, you'll see we've slashed the prices on all period pants at Unfabled. With period pants now 20% cheaper, there's never been a better time to make the switch to more sustainable menstrual care.

Thinking of giving period pants a go? Here's what you need to know.

How do period pants work?

Curious about the magic behind period pants? These ingenious undergarments work by incorporating absorbent layers that trap and lock in menstrual fluid, providing leak-proof protection throughout your cycle. Think of them as your reliable sidekick, offering a comfortable and secure alternative to traditional pads and tampons.

Simply wear them like regular underwear during your period, and let the absorbent layers do their job. They're designed to keep you feeling dry and confident, so you can go about your day worry-free.

How long can a pair of period pants last?

One of the advantages of period pants is their durability. These innovative undergarments are designed to last, providing long-lasting protection throughout your menstrual cycle. On average, a pair of period pants can be used for an entire day, depending on your flow. They are reusable, making them a cost-effective and sustainable choice. Say goodbye to constantly purchasing disposable products and hello to the longevity and reliability of period pants.

How do I wash period pants?

Maintaining the longevity of your period pants is crucial for their effectiveness. Washing them is simple and can be easily incorporated into your laundry routine. After use, rinse the pants in cold water to remove any excess blood. Then, toss them in the washing machine with your regular laundry, using a mild detergent. Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can reduce the absorbency of the material. Air-dry or tumble dry on low heat, and your period pants will be ready for another cycle. Easy, eco-friendly, and budget-conscious – washing period pants is a breeze.

With the government's decision to abolish the tax on period pants, these innovative and eco-friendly menstrual products are now even more accessible. Embrace the freedom and comfort they provide, knowing that you're making a sustainable choice for both your well-being and the environment. Follow our guide on how period pants work, who they are for, how long they last, and how to wash them, and embark on a journey towards hassle-free and affordable menstrual care. Period pants – because you deserve comfort, confidence, and convenience during your period.
